LIVING WATER EPISODE 683 || 17TH APRIL, 2026
By Solomon Uwumbolibe Mensah
FROM BROKEN IDOLS TO TRUE WORSHIP
Scripture Reading: Judges 6:26
“Then build a proper kind of altar to the Lord your God on the top of this height. Using the wood of the Asherah pole that you cut down, offer the second bull as a burnt offering.”
After Gideon obeys God by tearing down the altar of Baal, God gives him another instruction that completes the process of transformation. He is not only told to remove what is false, but also to build what is right. This moment shows us that God is not interested in partial obedience. True spiritual renewal involves both separation from idolatry and wholehearted devotion to God. What God removes from our lives must be replaced with true worship.
1: GOD REQUIRES COMPLETE TRANSFORMATION, NOT PARTIAL OBEDIENCE
God did not stop at telling Gideon to destroy the altar of Baal; He also instructed him to build a proper altar to the Lord. This reveals that obedience to God is not complete until a new foundation is established. Many people are willing to stop doing what is wrong but are not willing to start doing what is right. However, God’s desire is full transformation, removing sin and replacing it with righteousness.
2: TRUE WORSHIP MUST BE BUILT ACCORDING TO GOD’S INSTRUCTIONS
God specifically said to build a “proper kind of altar,” showing that worship is not based on human ideas or convenience but on divine instruction. This teaches us that not everything labeled as worship is acceptable to God. Worship must align with His truth, His Word, and His standards. In John 4:24, Jesus confirms this by saying that true worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth. God determines how He is to be worshiped, not man.
3: GOD CAN REDEEM WHAT WAS ONCE USED FOR IDOLATRY
One of the most powerful parts of this instruction is that God tells Gideon to use the wood of the Asherah pole, an object of idolatry, as fuel for the burnt offering. This shows that God has the power to take what was once dedicated to evil and turn it into something that glorifies Him. Nothing is beyond God’s ability to redeem. Even the remnants of our past failures can become instruments of worship when placed in His hands.
4: OBEDIENCE INVOLVES BOTH REMOVAL AND REPLACEMENT
Gideon’s assignment shows a clear pattern: tear down the idol, then build the altar. This teaches us that spiritual obedience is twofold. It is not enough to remove sin; we must also establish righteousness. Many believers struggle because they stop at “letting go” but fail to “build up.” God calls us not only to turn away from darkness but also to walk in the light by building a life centered on Him.
5: TRUE WORSHIP REQUIRES SACRIFICE AND SURRENDER
Gideon was instructed to offer the second bull as a burnt offering, symbolizing total surrender to God. Burnt offerings in Scripture represented complete dedication, where nothing was held back. This points to the kind of worship God desires today. As Romans 12:1 teaches, we are to present our bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God. True worship always costs something, it requires surrender, obedience, and trust.
God’s instruction to Gideon reveals a complete journey of transformation: destroy what is false, build what is true, and offer what is valuable. This is the pattern of true spiritual renewal. God does not leave us empty after removing idols—He fills our lives with Himself and calls us into deeper worship and obedience.
CALL TO ACTION:
Consider your own life; what has God removed, and what are you building in its place? Do not stop at turning away from sin; commit yourself to building a life of true worship, obedience, and devotion to God.
PRAYER:
Heavenly Father, thank You for calling us into complete transformation. Help us not only to turn away from what is wrong but to build lives that honor You fully. Teach us to worship You in spirit and in truth, and to live as living sacrifices before You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
