THE GOD WHO WAITS
Scripture Reading: Judges 6:18
“Please do not go away until I come back and bring my offering and set it before you.” And the Lord said, “I will wait until you return.”
In this moment, Gideon moves from doubt to devotion. After asking for a sign, he now desires to respond with an offering, showing reverence and honor to the One speaking to him. What is remarkable is not only Gideon’s willingness to give, but God’s response: “I will wait.” This reveals a powerful truth about the nature of God; He is not distant or impatient, but relational and willing to engage with those who seek Him sincerely. This passage teaches us about honoring God and recognizing His willingness to meet us in our acts of obedience.
1: TRUE ENCOUNTER WITH GOD PRODUCES A HEART OF GIVING
Gideon’s request to bring an offering shows that when a person truly encounters God, the natural response is not just belief but worship expressed through giving. He did not want to come empty-handed before the Lord, recognizing that divine encounters deserve honor. In the same way, when we experience God’s presence in our lives, it should move us to respond; through our time, our resources, and our devotion; demonstrating that we value the relationship and recognize His greatness.
2: GOD VALUES INTENTIONAL WORSHIP
Gideon asked God to wait while he prepared his offering, showing that worship is not always spontaneous but can be intentional and prepared. He was willing to take time and effort to present something meaningful before the Lord. This teaches us that honoring God should not be rushed or casual; instead, it should be deliberate and thoughtful, reflecting a heart that truly reveres Him. Intentional worship demonstrates that we prioritize God above distractions and are willing to invest ourselves fully in our relationship with Him.
3: GOD IS WILLING TO WAIT FOR YOU
One of the most profound statements in this passage is God’s response: “I will wait until you return.” This reveals a patient and gracious God who is willing to pause for the sake of relationship. In a world where everything feels rushed and demanding, it is comforting to know that God is not in a hurry to abandon us. He is willing to wait while we prepare, grow, and respond. This shows that God values connection over speed and is more interested in our hearts than in our timing.
4: PREPARATION PRECEDES DIVINE MANIFESTATION
Before Gideon would experience the fullness of God’s confirmation, he first prepared an offering, showing that preparation often comes before deeper encounters with God. This principle reminds us that there are moments when God invites us to participate actively; through obedience, sacrifice, and readiness; before revealing more of His power and presence. Preparation aligns our hearts with God and positions us to receive what He wants to do in our lives.
5: GOD HONORS SINCERE DEVOTION
God’s willingness to wait demonstrates that He honors sincerity. Gideon was not acting out of obligation but out of a genuine desire to honor God, and God responded by meeting him in that moment. This teaches us that God is not looking for perfection but for authenticity. When we approach Him with a sincere heart, He responds with grace, patience, and presence, affirming that our devotion matters to Him.
This passage reveals a beautiful exchange; Gideon desires to honor God, and God is willing to wait for Gideon. It is a picture of relationship, where devotion meets divine patience. It reminds us that God is not distant but engaged, not hurried but attentive, and not indifferent but responsive to sincere hearts.
