FROM FEAR TO PEACE
Scripture Reading: Judges 6:22–23
“When Gideon realized that it was the angel of the Lord, he exclaimed, ‘Alas, Sovereign Lord! I have seen the angel of the Lord face to face!’ But the Lord said to him, ‘Peace! Do not be afraid. You are not going to die.’”
In this moment, Gideon moves from uncertainty to revelation, he suddenly realizes that he has been in the presence of the Lord. Instead of excitement, fear grips his heart because, according to the understanding of that time, seeing God face to face meant death. His reaction reflects a deep awareness of God’s holiness and human unworthiness. Yet, God responds not with judgment, but with reassurance: “Peace! Do not be afraid.” This encounter reveals a powerful transformation; from fear to peace; showing us how God meets us even in our trembling moments.
1: THE REVELATION OF GOD PRODUCES HOLY AWE
When Gideon realized it was the angel of the Lord, fear overwhelmed him because divine encounters reveal the greatness and holiness of God. This was not a casual moment; it was a confrontation with the divine, and it exposed human frailty. In the same way, when people truly encounter God, there is often a sense of awe, reverence, and even fear, because His presence reveals who He is and who we are. This kind of fear is not meant to destroy us but to awaken us to the reality of God’s glory.
2: HUMANITY FEARS JUDGMENT IN GOD’S PRESENCE
Gideon’s cry, “I have seen the Lord,” was filled with the expectation of death, reflecting the belief that sinful humanity cannot survive direct exposure to God’s holiness. This fear is rooted in the understanding that God is perfectly holy while humans are imperfect. Even today, many people feel unworthy or afraid to draw near to God, fearing rejection or punishment. Gideon’s reaction shows that without assurance, an encounter with God can feel terrifying rather than comforting.
3: GOD RESPONDS WITH PEACE, NOT DESTRUCTION
Instead of confirming Gideon’s fear, God speaks words of comfort: “Peace! Do not be afraid.” This reveals God’s heart, He is not eager to destroy but to restore and reassure. God understands human fear and meets it with grace. His voice brings calm where there is panic and assurance where there is uncertainty. This moment teaches us that God’s intention toward us is not harm but peace, even when we feel undeserving.
4: GOD’S PEACE OVERRIDES HUMAN FEAR
The word “Peace” was not just a greeting; it was a declaration that Gideon was safe. God replaced fear with divine assurance. This same truth is echoed in the New Testament, where John 14:27 records Jesus saying, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you… Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” Also, Romans 5:1 declares that we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through Christ, the fear of judgment is removed, and we are given confidence to approach God without terror.
5: IN CHRIST, WE CAN APPROACH GOD WITHOUT FEAR
What Gideon experienced temporarily, believers now experience permanently through Jesus Christ. The fear of dying in God’s presence has been replaced by the assurance of life through Christ. Hebrews 4:16 encourages us to come boldly to the throne of grace, not with fear, but with confidence. Jesus has bridged the gap between a holy God and humanity, making it possible for us to encounter God not with dread, but with peace and assurance.
Gideon’s encounter began with fear but ended with peace because God spoke reassurance into his situation. This transformation reveals the heart of God; to replace fear with peace and uncertainty with assurance. Through Jesus Christ, what once caused fear now becomes a place of confidence, where we can stand in God’s presence knowing we are accepted.
