A SIGN OF ASSURANCE
Scripture Readings: Judges 6:17
“Gideon replied, ‘If now I have found favor in your eyes, give me a sign that it is really you talking to me.’”
After receiving a powerful promise from God, Gideon did something very human; he asked for a sign. Even after hearing “I will be with you,” his heart still wrestled with uncertainty. This moment reveals the tension between faith and doubt that many believers experience. Gideon was not rejecting God’s call; he simply desired assurance that it was truly God speaking. In the same way, many people today seek clarity and confirmation when faced with divine direction, wanting to be certain before they take a bold step forward.
1: THE DESIRE FOR CONFIRMATION IS HUMAN
Gideon’s request for a sign shows that even those chosen by God can struggle with uncertainty, and his question was not born out of rebellion but from a sincere desire to be sure. In life, when we face major decisions or sense a calling, it is natural to seek confirmation, especially when the stakes are high. Gideon teaches us that questioning does not always mean lack of faith; sometimes, it reflects a heart that genuinely wants to follow God rightly and avoid error.
2: SEEKING GOD’S FAVOR PRECEDES SEEKING A SIGN
Before asking for a sign, Gideon said, “If now I have found favor in your eyes,” which shows that his request was rooted in relationship, not just curiosity. He was more concerned about being accepted by God than merely receiving proof. This is important because many people seek signs without first seeking God’s presence and favor. True confirmation comes when a person prioritizes alignment with God, ensuring that their heart is positioned correctly before asking for direction.
3: SIGNS SHOULD CONFIRM, NOT REPLACE FAITH
Gideon asked for a sign, but this did not mean he intended to live by signs alone; rather, he sought reassurance to strengthen his faith for the assignment ahead. Signs are meant to confirm what God has already spoken, not to replace a life of trust and obedience. If a person depends entirely on signs, they may never move forward, always waiting for another confirmation. Instead, signs should serve as encouragement, helping believers step out boldly in faith once God’s will has been made clear.
4: GOD UNDERSTANDS OUR NEED FOR ASSURANCE
God did not rebuke Gideon for asking for a sign; instead, He responded with patience and grace, demonstrating that He understands human weakness and meets us where we are. This reveals God’s compassionate nature; He does not demand perfect faith before He works with us, but He nurtures our faith as we grow. When we approach God sincerely, He is willing to guide us, confirm His word, and strengthen our confidence in Him.
5: ASSURANCE PREPARES US FOR OBEDIENCE
Gideon’s request for a sign was not an end in itself; it was a step toward obedience. Once he received assurance, he was able to move forward with greater confidence in fulfilling God’s mission. In the same way, when God confirms His word to us, it is not so we remain comfortable, but so we can act with boldness and clarity. Assurance is meant to lead to action, not stagnation.
Gideon’s request reminds us that faith is sometimes a journey that includes questions, seeking, and confirmation. God does not reject a sincere heart that seeks clarity; instead, He responds with patience and reassurance. However, the goal is not to remain in doubt, but to grow into confident obedience, trusting that the God who speaks will also guide and fulfill His promises.
CALL TO ACTION:
If you are in a place of uncertainty, do not be afraid to seek God sincerely for clarity, but ensure your heart is aligned with Him first. Ask for confirmation with the intention to obey, and when God provides assurance, step forward in faith without hesitation.
PRAYER:
Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your patience and understanding when we struggle with doubt. Help us to seek You sincerely and to trust Your voice above all others. When we ask for confirmation, let it strengthen our faith and lead us into obedience. Guide us clearly and give us the courage to act on Your word. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
