THE MOVIE WATCHERS AND THE BUILDER
“A Parable of the Kingdom”
"The Kingdom of God is like a young man who set his heart to build. Though he possessed little, he labored faithfully, sowing his days with wisdom and his nights with diligence. His hands were busy creating, while his eyes remained fixed upon the work set before him.
Now there lived in the same Nation a great multitude of people. Some were young and strong. Others were old and experienced. Among them were learned professionals, respected clergy, influential leaders of institutions, and men and women of great reputation.
Instead of planting vineyards, they gathered each evening to watch a great moving picture. As they watched, they turned their attention away from the story and fixed their eyes upon the young builder. They whispered among themselves,
'Where has he gone today?'
'Who visited him?'
'Who finances his work?'
'What is his next move?'
Soon they appointed watchers. Some followed him in the marketplace. Others listened at meetings. Others searched through his words. Others invented stories they hoped would stain his name. They said,
'If we cannot stop his work, perhaps we can destroy his reputation.'
They spent many hours tracking his footsteps but few hours building their own houses.
They counted his blessings but neglected their own fields.
They measured his progress while their own vineyards became overgrown with weeds.
Then they formed a secret council and declared,
'We shall blackmail him. We shall frighten him. We shall make him abandon the work that has begun.'
Yet they did not know that the Builder of Heaven had already gone before the young man.
For every trap they prepared became a testimony.
Every accusation became an advertisement.
Every rumor caused new doors to open.
Every attempt to bury him became the soil from which greater fruit sprang forth.
The more they watched him, the less they watched over their own lives.
The more they chased him, the farther behind they fell.
Years passed.
The young man had built businesses, employed workers, created opportunities, and became a blessing to many nations.
Meanwhile, those who had spent their strength plotting against him looked around and found empty barns, neglected families, forgotten dreams, and wasted years.
Then there was weeping and gnashing of teeth.
They cried,
'If only we had spent our time building instead of spying.'
'If only we had planted instead of plotting.'
'If only we had invested instead of envying.'
But the harvest had already come.
So it is in the Kingdom of God.
For whoever spends his days building what God has placed in his hands shall gather an abundant harvest.
But whoever abandons his own assignment to destroy another man's calling shall discover that envy produces no fruit, malice builds no house, and hatred fills no storehouse.
For every person shall one day stand before the Lord, not to give an account of another man's work, but of his own.
Therefore, let those who have ears to hear, hear.
Build what God has entrusted to you.
Bless those who prosper.
Labor faithfully.
For the Kingdom belongs not to the watchers of men, but to the workers of righteousness."
