PREPARE FOR POSSESSION
Scripture Reading: Joshua 1:10–11
"So Joshua ordered the officers of the people: 'Go through the camp and tell the people, "Get your provisions ready. Three days from now you will cross the Jordan here to go in and take possession of the land the Lord your God is giving you for your own. “Joshua 1:10–11 (NIV)
Joshua had just been commissioned by God to lead Israel after the death of Moses. God had assured him of His presence, His power, and His promises. Immediately after receiving God's instructions, Joshua did not hesitate. He arose in faith, organized the people, and gave them a command that would prepare an entire nation for the fulfillment of God's promise. The promised land had been waiting for Israel for generations, but before they could possess it, they had to prepare themselves spiritually, mentally, and physically.
Many believers desire God's promises but neglect the preparation required to receive them. God's blessings are freely given by grace, yet He often requires His people to prepare themselves for the opportunities He is about to release. Joshua's instruction teaches us that preparation always precedes possession. Before every new season, God calls His people to readiness.
1. Faith Responds Immediately to God's Word: Joshua did not delay after hearing God's voice. He immediately instructed the officers to go throughout the camp and prepare the people. Genuine faith is demonstrated through prompt obedience. Delayed obedience often becomes disobedience because hesitation allows fear, doubt, and excuses to grow.
God had promised Israel the land, but Joshua understood that faith required action. He did not merely celebrate the promise; he organized the people to move toward it. Likewise, when God speaks into our lives, we should respond without unnecessary delay. Whether God calls us to serve, forgive, give, lead, or step into a new opportunity, faith moves when God speaks.
Our confidence is not in our own ability but in the certainty of God's promise. When God opens a door, our responsibility is to walk through it with obedient faith.
2. Preparation Is Evidence of Expectation: Joshua commanded the people to prepare their provisions before they had crossed the Jordan. They were instructed to get ready before seeing the miracle. Their preparation revealed their expectation that God would fulfill His promise.
Preparation demonstrates that we believe God is about to act. Noah built the ark before rain fell. Joseph stored grain before the famine arrived. David gathered stones before confronting Goliath. Likewise, believers prepare today for the blessings they expect tomorrow.
Preparation includes developing our character, strengthening our faith, improving our skills, organizing our resources, and aligning our lives with God's will. Opportunities often come suddenly, but only prepared people are able to seize them. God frequently works through those who are ready before the miracle becomes visible.
3. Every Promise Has God's Appointed Time: Joshua announced that within three days they would cross the Jordan. God had determined not only the promise but also its timing. Israel had waited forty years because of unbelief, but now God's appointed season had arrived.
God's timing is always perfect. We may experience seasons of waiting, but God's delays are never His denials. During the waiting period, God is shaping our character, strengthening our faith, and preparing circumstances that we cannot yet see.
The three-day instruction also reminds us that breakthrough often comes after a period of preparation. God's promises are fulfilled according to His calendar, not ours. Our responsibility is to remain faithful until His appointed time arrives.
4. God's Promises Must Be Possessed: Joshua declared that they would "take possession" of the land the Lord was giving them. Although God had already given the land, Israel still had to enter, fight, and occupy it. Divine promises require human participation.
Many blessings remain unclaimed because people never step forward in faith. God gives gifts, but we must receive them. He opens doors, but we must walk through them. He provides opportunities, but we must act upon them.
Spiritual growth, ministry effectiveness, victory over sin, restored relationships, and Kingdom assignments all require active faith. God's promises are invitations to participate with Him, not excuses for passivity.
5. God's Blessings Are Personal and Purposeful: Joshua reminded the Israelites that God was giving the land "for your own." God's promises were not abstract ideas but personal inheritances prepared specifically for His covenant people.
Likewise, God has unique purposes for every believer. He has prepared good works for us to accomplish, gifts for us to develop, and assignments for us to fulfill. His blessings are never intended merely for personal comfort but for advancing His Kingdom and becoming a blessing to others.
When God entrusts us with His promises, He also entrusts us with responsibility. Every blessing should produce greater faithfulness, greater generosity, and greater service to His glory.
Joshua 1:10–11 reminds us that God's promises require prepared people. Joshua acted immediately upon God's command, called the nation to readiness, trusted God's timing, and led the people toward their inheritance. The promised land was God's gift, but Israel still had to prepare, move, and possess it by faith.
As believers today, God continues to call us into new seasons of purpose and blessing. Before the doors open, He tells us to prepare. Before the miracle appears, He calls us to believe. Before we possess the promise, He teaches us to trust Him completely.
May we respond with immediate obedience, prepare with expectation, wait patiently for God's perfect timing, and courageously possess every promise He has prepared for us. The God who promised is faithful, and those who prepare in faith will witness the fulfillment of His Word.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for Your faithful promises that never fail. Give me a heart that responds immediately whenever You speak. Help me to prepare myself spiritually, mentally, and practically for every assignment You have planned for my life. Teach me to trust Your perfect timing and to walk by faith even before I see the fulfillment of Your promises. Give me courage to step forward, possess every blessing You have prepared for me, and use every gift You provide for the advancement of Your Kingdom. May my life always be ready for Your next move and bring glory to Your name. In Jesus' name, Amen.
